Ibrahim Avenges Loss, But #1 Trinity Defeats #8 Princeton To Open CSA Team Championships
February 23, 2018 | Men's Squash
Freshman Youssef Ibrahim avenged a loss from last weekend to Trinity's Kush Kumar, a showdown of two of the nation's top-ranked players, but that wouldn't be enough to lead the eighth-seeded Princeton men's squash team to an upset of top-seeded Trinity during Friday's opening round of the CSA team championships.
Â
Princeton, which played its first match in the A draw since 2013, played its way into several close games early against the undefeated Bantams, but Trinity was able to finish the majority of them to claim a number of 3-0 victories.
Â
The highlight match came at #1, where Ibrahim dropped an 11-4 opener before bouncing back with tight 11-8 and 11-9 wins. The 2018 Ivy League Rookie of the Year had full control by the end and closed the match with an 11-1 win.
Â
Princeton won't lack for motivation in the consolation round, where it can make a move as high as fifth in the final national rankings. That journey will begin Saturday at 11 am when Princeton faces fifth-seeded Dartmouth in a rematch of a Feb. 4 thriller in Hanover. The Big Green took two of the final three matches, including a wild five-game match at the #8 position, to fight off the Tigers for a 5-4 win.
Â
Barring injuries from Friday, all nine matchups will be exactly the same from the regular season match between the two programs. Dartmouth has won the last three in this series, though the last two were 5-4 thrillers.
