Princeton Finishes 8th At CSA Nationals, Turns Focus To Individual Championships
February 25, 2018 | Men's Squash
The Princeton men's squash team completed a grueling weekend at the CSA national team championships by finishing eighth, the program's best finish since 2013, after dropping a 7-2 match to the sixth-seeded Penn Quakers Sunday morning. The shorthanded Tigers, playing without two starters in the team finale, saw a pair of early 3-2 decisions go against them, and they weren't able to recover to knock off Penn for the second time this season.
Princeton freshman Cole Becker had one of the best performances of the weekend for the Tigers, as he moved to the #2 spot and defeated Hayes Murphy 11-6, 10-12, 11-4, 11-6 to give his team its first win of the day. The match would ultimately be clinched during the middle shift, but junior Cody Cortes came back in the final shift and added a decisive 3-0 win at the #4 position.
It was the first shift when Penn took control, as the Tigers were twice within one game of grabbing an early match. Freshman Alex Engstrom moved to the highest position he has played against a Top-10 team (#6) and pushed Yash Bhargava deep into a fifth game before dropping the finale 11-9. Junior Clark Doyle, playing the #1 spot, grabbed a 2-1 lead over former Penn #1 Marwan Mahmoud, but he fell in two close games to fall 3-2.
Princeton will now turn its attention to the CSA individual championships, which will take place next weekend at George Washington. Both the men's and women's championships will be held simultaneously, and both should have strong contenders for deep runs; reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Youssef Ibrahim will be making his CSA championships debut, while senior Olivia Fiechter, a former semifinalist, will be playing in her final collegiate competition.
