5th-Ranked Dartmouth Holds Off Princeton Charge In 5-4 Thriller
February 04, 2018 | Men's Squash
This week showed just how tight some of the top programs in college squash are, and how exciting the rest of February could be. On Wednesday, Princeton went to Philadelphia and pulled out a 5-4 win at Penn. On Saturday, Penn went to Dartmouth and scored a 5-4 win. On Sunday, it was Dartmouth's turn, as the fifth-ranked Big Green held off a late charge to earn a 5-4 win over the seventh-ranked Tigers.
Princeton had two freshmen on court at the end trying to pull off the dramatic comeback. Trailing 4-3 in the match, Cole Becker rallied from 2-1 down with wins of 11-4 and 11-4 at the #3 position to get the match even at 4-4.
Unfortunately, Dartmouth veteran Jack Harvey was able to finish off his own rally over Tiger freshman Alex Engstrom. After a 12-10 win in the fourth, Harvey closed the match with an 11-6 victory to clinch the Big Green's third straight win over Princeton.
Freshman Duncan Joyce got Princeton on the board in the opening shift with a 3-0 win at the #6 position, and classmate Youssef Ibrahim bounced back from a tight loss in the first game to control the final three in a dominant 3-1 win at the #1 position.
Junior Clark Doyle had his best performance since the finals break with a terrific 3-0 win at the #4 position, which helped draw Princeton even going into the final shift. Dartmouth got a 3-0 at #5, which allowed Harvey to clinch the win later that shift.
Princeton will take on Ivy League frontrunner Columbia Friday at 6 pm in New York City, and then it will honor its senior class Sunday afternoon against Cornell.
