Senior Duo Caps Princeton Careers As CSA Scholar Athletes & McFarland Award Recipients
May 16, 2018 | Men's Squash
The senior duo of Abhimanyu Shah and Komron Shayegan helped bring the Princeton men's squash team back to the main draw of the CSA team championships during their final season, but the work they did throughout their four-year Tiger careers helped create a foundation for success in both the near and distant future. Both Shah and Shayegan — co-captains during the 2017-18 season — shared two impressive honors following their senior seasons, which highlight their well-rounded success at the University.
First, both were named recipients of the 2018 CSA Scholar Athlete Award, which is granted to juniors or seniors who have played on the team throughout their college career, participated in the majority of the team's matches in the top-10 of the lineup during the season, and achieved a high academic standing at their institution. For full criteria, please see here.
Both were also honored with the team's George C. McFarland, Jr. Squash Award, which is presented annually to that member of the Princeton men's varsity squash team who, through enthusiasm, ability, sportsmanship and leadership has contributed most to the sport and his team.
Shah, a two-year captain, won 37 matches for Princeton over his career, including three double-digit win seasons. He saved arguably his most important — and dramatic — victory for his senior year, when he fought off match ball in the fifth game and won 12-10 over Penn to help Princeton to its highest-ranked victory since 2013.
Shayegan has been a testament of persistence and development throughout his Tiger career. He went from a walk-on to a key starter, and he improved his win total every year at Princeton. He had one of his most impressive wins as a junior during a road match at Rochester, and he followed with a pair of Ivy victories this season.
