In Her Own Words
My main role on campus is directing the SHARE office— that's Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising, Resources & Education. We address interpersonal violence and abuse through survivor-centered support and provide primary prevention education to the student body.
Sports shaped my own values and identity— I played soccer, field hockey, softball, and rowed crew in college. When Coach Barlow invited me to be a fellow to the Men's Soccer team, I jumped at the chance thinking I could be helpful, given my confidential status and connections with resources on and off campus. I try to attend as many games as I can, and make myself accessible to the team, whether facilitating a training or getting to know them over lunch. My favorite aspect of being a fellow is being a fan. I love attending games, bringing my family, and cheering on the sideline. Most meaningful are the one-to-one conversations. I truly enjoy being able to assist a student-athlete, even if they are just looking for an answer to a question. I learn a lot from the team, too. This fall, I learned how to host (and, how not to host) a 10-year old birthday party. The team made sure I would not to be "that mom." For that, my son and I are grateful.
Princeton Athletics' values are closely aligned to the work we do at SHARE, advocating for an individual or a policy change across campus, and in the prevention curriculum we teach. Respect Matters, for example, is the violence prevention component to the University's UMatter initiative and respect undergirds the Strength in Coaching on Relationships, Respect & Equality (SCORRE) training that we created for Princeton Athletics. I really like the "team around the team" concept. I am happy to be a specialized resource for soccer as well as other teams, and to be a point of contact for support. There are so many of us on campus — a whole community of fellows!— who care about the well-being of student-athletes, and are here for them.
I did not expect to feel so personally connected to Princeton Athletics, or Men's Soccer more specifically. I have a great deal of admiration for our soccer coaches. I believe they have truly integrated the Be A TIGER philosophy and are building a foundation for the success of current and future student-athletes. It is a privilege to be one of their fellows.
