Sowers '20 Selected With Second Overall Pick In PLL Draft
April 26, 2021 | General, Men's Lacrosse
Michael Sowers, the leading scorer in Princeton men's lacrosse history who led the Tigers to the top of the national rankings in the shortened 2020 season, was selected by the Waterdogs with the No. 2 overall pick of the first round of the Premier Lacrosse League draft Monday night. Sowers, who graduated from Princeton a year ago and is playing as a graduate student this season at Duke, will be reunited with fellow Tiger alum Zach Currier on the Waterdogs.
"I'm forever grateful for the experience that I had at Princeton, particularly for the entire coaching staff, the support staff, and most importantly, all my teammates that I played with throughout my career," Sowers says. "I wouldn't be the person or player that I am today without their mentorship and guidance. I will always be grateful for my time with them and all that I learned from them."
Sowers finished his Princeton career with 302 points on 121 goals and 181 assists. His long list of accomplishments at Princeton include the three best single-season scoring totals in program history in addition to the career records for points and goals.
His senior year at Princeton lasted five games, all of which Princeton won, while he averaged an astonishing 9.4 points per game, with 16 goals and 31 assists for 47 points. He was named the Division I Player of the Year by Inside Lacrosse, and he was the heavy favorite for the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's top player before the award was not given.
With his 29 goals and 31 assists through 13 games with Duke, Sowers has career totals of 362 points and 212 assists, both of which are fourth in Division I history. His 6.03 points per game are fifth in Division I history, and he and Lyle Thompson of Albany are the only two players in Division I history with at least 150 career goals and 200 career assists.
"Everyone with the Princeton men's lacrosse program is happy for Michael and looking forward to seeing him compete in the PLL," says Princeton head coach Matt Madalon. "He was more than a great player and fierce competitor at Princeton. He was a leader who inspired every one of his teammates during his time at Princeton, and he was as special off the field as he was on it."
