Ford Family Director of Athletics John Mack has announced a pair of new appointments to the senior leadership team with Princeton Athletics in the hiring of Greg Busch '99 as Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Student-Athlete Experience and the promotion of Kellie Staples to Senior Associate Director of Athletics for Advancement/Senior Woman Administrator.
Busch, a former men's soccer player at Princeton, returns to his alma mater after most recently serving as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance and Internal Operations at Rider from 2006-2022. With the Broncs, he oversaw compliance and academic support while also serving as the department's liaison to Financial Aid, the Registrar's Office, Residence Life and the Office of Community Standards. In addition, he was the sport administrator for men's and women's soccer, cross country/track and field, and baseball and also taught several courses on athletic administration at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Prior to his time at Rider, Busch worked as Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance & General Admission at Princeton from 2003-06. He graduated in 1999 from Princeton with a degree in English, and he earned his Master's in Athletic Leadership from Rider.
"I am thrilled to welcome Greg and his family back to Princeton. His combination of administrative experience and leadership, passion for helping student-athletes, and commitment to our mission of education through athletics made him stand out among all of the candidates," said Mack. "As a former student-athlete on our men's soccer team, he has a first-hand knowledge of what our current Tigers are experiencing and can relate directly with them on those shared experiences which is an added bonus. Greg will be a fantastic addition to our department."
Busch played four years on the men's soccer team, the first under Bob Bradley and the final three under current head coach Jim Barlow. During Busch's first season, the Tigers went 13-5 overall and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.
"I am overjoyed to return to Princeton, a place so near and dear to my heart," Busch said. "I want to thank John Mack for giving me this fantastic opportunity and I can't wait to start working with Princeton's athletic staff, coaches and student-athletes. I look forward to utilizing my experiences in college athletics and as a former student-athlete at Princeton to help propel Princeton Athletics into the future and to enhance Princeton's standing as the premier broad-based intercollegiate athletic program in the country."
Staples joined Princeton Athletics in the fall of 2005 and has held multiple roles in the department over the past 17 years, most recently serving as Princeton's Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Advancement since the spring of 2019. In her current role, she has oversight of athletics annual fundraising, which includes Athletics Friends Groups, the Princeton Varsity Club and Tiger Athletics Give Day (TAGD). Staples works closely with University Advancement on strategic planning, including helping to develop strategy on all athletics endowment funding and capital fundraising. Staples oversees the Athletics Advancement team which spearheads athletics alumni engagement and programming including working directly with athletic leadership volunteers and the University's Alumni Engagement team to continue to build community through athletics.
"I am excited to have Kellie take on this new role as our Senior Woman Administrator," Mack said. "Providing mentorship and creating meaningful opportunities for women is something that Kellie has done throughout her 17 years here in Princeton Athletics. I am confident she will continue to be an exceptional leader for us in this area."
Staples has been instrumental in leading record-setting campaigns each November through TAGD, which she helped found eight years ago. Since its inception, TAGD has resulted in more than $20M for Princeton Athletics across more than 60,000 gifts. Staples has also helped lead campaigns resulting in the endowment of five coaching positions since 2019.
"I am honored to be named the Senior Woman Administrator at Princeton and am grateful to John for his trust in providing me this opportunity," Staples said. "I have been fortunate to have been the beneficiary of having had strong women serve as mentors to me during my tenure at Princeton and look forward to being able to continue that tradition."
