Hector Martinez joined Princeton University Athletics in 2021 and currently serves as the Clinical Sports Dietitian, as part of Athletic Medicine and the Performance team. In this new role, Martinez oversees and provides nutrition support to all 38 varsity teams and 1 club team. His work is centered around advocating and educating student-athletes on the importance of nutrition, and how it plays an integral role in their athletic and academic success, while providing them with the tools needed to make informed choices on and off campus. Primary responsibilities include individual nutrition counseling and team educations, weight certifications and body composition analysis. Also, Martinez serves as a resource for the coaching/support staff, providing guidance regarding team travel nutrition, dietary supplements, and daily fueling operations for practice and competition. Martinez works closely with campus partners including Campus Dining and the Campus Wellness Dietitian.
Martinez previously worked for Rutgers University Athletics from 2018 to 2021 as part of the Sports Nutrition Department - Sports Health, serving as a Sports Nutrition Assistant and Assistant Sports Dietitian, providing support and traveling with football, and various Olympic sports teams.
Prior to that, Martinez previously interned with the Sports Nutrition Department at Duke University in 2018. In 2017, he was a strength and conditioning intern and performance nutrition coach for Pope John XXIII HS football team in Sparta, New Jersey. Martinez was the first volunteer to join the Rutgers Performance Nutrition team in 2016 and was an integral part in the growth of Rutgers Sports Nutrition.
A native of North Bergen, New Jersey, Martinez graduated from Montclair State University in 2016 earning a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Science – Dietetics, also completing a Dietetic internship with the University in 2018. Martinez is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). He is level 1 certified in ISAK Anthropometry. He is an active member of the Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietetics Association, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry.
Martinez is married to the former Linda Locandro, and they reside in Milltown, New Jersey. Together, they have two daughters, Eva Valentina and Isabella Sofia.
