Off The Field:
The summer after her freshman year, Claire participated in the "PLATO in Berlin" summer philosophy seminar, offered by Princeton's Office of International Programs, situated in Berlin, Germany. It's a 14-person seminar only on the subject of PLATO's republic, where 3-6 hours of class everyday translated into a 30-page final paper. Also, this past summer, she spent two weeks in Hangzhou, China, where she interviewed rurals on their use of an e-commerce site, helping her research for her thesis on rural economic development in China.
Claire got involved in the PLATO in Berlin program by reading a mass email sent out about it, as she was looking for opportunities at the time to go abroad. It was the first year that it was offered. She regularly spends summers in China, so her familiarity with the place was key for her opportunity to do thesis research there. She was helped throughout the process by a Beijing University professor who translated for her.
Claire Klausner:
"The PLATO in Berlin gave me an opportunity to meet an entirely different group of people pretty early on in my Princeton experience that I wouldn't have met otherwise, so it helped to broaden my horizons. It also allowed me to see different parts of the world, meet different people, and see different subjects that I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to. It has enriched my Princeton experience; it has made it more diverse and directed in ways that I wouldn't have expected."
