Hubbard, Sims Lead Princeton Past Yale, 16-5

Jesse Hubbard scored five goals and had one assist and Josh Sims had career-highs with four goals and five points to lead third-ranked Princeton to a 16-5 win over Yale in the Ivy League opener for both.
The game was played in front of a sun-splashed crowd of 1,604 at the Class of 1952 Stadium, where Princeton (4-1, 1-0 Ivy League) is now 15-0 all-time. The gametime temperature of 83 degrees was almost 60 degrees higher than one week earlier, when Princeton defeated Penn State in a game featuring snow and sleet.
While the weather might have been completely different, the third quarter was almost a mirror-image of the previous week's. Again Princeton broke open the game after intermission, outscoring Yale 6-0 to turn a 5-3 halftime lead into 11-3. Princeton had outscored Penn State 5-0 in the third quarter a week ago to take control of that game.
"It's our fourth win and all four have come in the second half," Princeton coach Bill Tierney said. "I've tried everything to get them going in the first half. I've tried motivational speeches. I've tried being calm. I've tried lying about the other team. I've tried telling the truth. I'm not sure what it is."
Hubbard scored the first two goals of the day in the first 6:50, but Yale (1-4, 0-1) fought back to make it 4-3 late in the second quarter. Lorne Smith scored two minutes before intermission to make it 5-3 at the break.
After that, it was all Tigers. Sims scored three times in the first nine minutes of the third quarter to give him 12 for the five games this year after he had eight in 15 games as a freshman last year.
"Josh was our leader today," Tierney said. "He was the one who really got us going."
Hubbard's five goals extended his school career-record to 132. Chris Massey extended a school record of his own, scoring twice to give him 40 straight games with at least one goal.
John Wynne had one goal and two assists, giving him five goals in the last three games. Jon Hess had two assists, while Smith had one goal and one assist.
Yale, who had five different players score once each, got 15 saves from Joe Pilch. The Tigers have not lost to the Bulldogs since the 1990 NCAA quarterfinals.
Princeton, the winner of 13 straight Ivy games, is at Brown next Saturday, April 4. The Tigers or Bears have won every Ivy title since 1990.
