Jesse Hubbard scored four goals and had one assist and Princeton broke open a close game in the third quarter as the top-ranked Tigers defeated Cornell 15-5 in a men's lacrosse game played in front of 2,604 fans at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton improved to 7-1 overall, 4-0 in the Ivy League, 16-0 all-time at the Class of 1952 Stadium and 17-0 in its last 17 Ivy League games. Cornell slipped to 4-7, 3-2.
Princeton outscored Cornell 6-0 in the third quarter to break open a game that had been 5-4 Tigers at intermission. Princeton has shut out four of its last five opponents in the third quarter and has outscored its opponents 23-2 during that time.
"I don?t know why it is," Princeton defenseman Kurt Lunkenheimer said. "They came out at us strong, but we were able to regroup."
Cornell led 2-0 on goals from Matt Wise and David Key in the first six minutes, and it was 3-1 Cornell after the first quarter and 4-2 when Josh Morgan scored 2:44 into the second quarter. Princeton then shut out Cornell for the next 39:16.
Princeton's rally began when Chris Massey scored the first of his three goals less than a minute after Morgan's. Lorne Smith and Jesse Hubbard then gave Princeton the lead for good with goals 22 seconds apart midway though the quarter.
Massey and Hubbard then scored twice each in the third quarter as Princeton took complete control of the game. Princeton built the lead to 15-4 before Cornell broke the scoreless streak with Ian Hafner's second goal of the day with three minutes left.
"We made a lot of adjustments at halftime," Princeton coach Bill Tierney said. "Dave [Pietramala, Cornell's first-year coach] is one of the best young coaches out there, and he had his team ready to play. We had to do some things differently on offense and defense."
Hubbard's four goals gave him 64 for his career in Ivy League games, eight off the league career record held by Jon Reese (Yale '92).
Jon Hess returned to the Princeton lineup after missing last week's game against Harvard with a pulled hamstring and had two goals and one assist. Corey Popham made eight saves in goal for the Tigers, who outshot Cornell 42-24.
Princeton hosts Rutgers Tuesday night (7:30) and then travels to Dartmouth next Saturday.
