Princeton - Josh Sims and B.J. Prager scored three goals and had one assist apiece to lead Princeton to an 11-8 win over Hofstra in a men's lacrosse game played in front of 1,994 at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
The win improved Princeton to 2-1 on the season, while Hofstra fell to 1-3. Princeton hosts Rutgers next Saturday before beginning its Ivy League season against Yale April 1.
The Tigers trailed Hofstra 4-1 in the second quarter and 5-4 at intermission before taking control in the third quarter, when Princeton outscored the Flying Dutchmen 4-0 to take the lead.
"Coach [Bill Tierney] challenged us at halftime to be more aggressive," said Princeton defenseman Ryan Mollett. "He got after us pretty good. We had to go after every ground ball, make every chance count. He said it was the turning point of our season."
Princeton, which opened its season with a 15-11 win over Johns Hopkins before losing last week 15-8 at Virginia, used a pair of Prager goals, as well as goals by Matt Striebel and Sims, to make it 8-5 by the end of the third quarter. Brendan Tierney then scored 26 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 9-5, and Hofstra would get no closer than three after that. "I think we were a little stunned last week [against Virginia]," Prager said. "It took us a little while in this game to get going. I'm not sure if that was a carryover or anything. Hofstra's a pretty good team, too, and they played us tough from the start."
Both teams were deliberate offensively, and Hofstra controlled the ball almost completely for the first 20 minutes or so in building the 4-1 lead. Scott Dooley scored the first goal of the day three minutes in, but neither team scored for almost 10 minutes after Dan Clark tied it at the 4:14 mark.
Dooley and Joe Kostolansky scored late in the first quarter to make it 3-1, and Doug Shanahan's goal 1:56 into the second built Hofstra's biggest lead. Chris Harrington and Clark scored for Princeton to make it 4-3, but Hofstra longstick Brian Spallina scored the first of his two end-to-end goals to make it 5-3. Sims scored 24 seconds before intermission for Princeton.
"I didn't really think I had to say much at halftime," said Tiger coach Tierney. "I thought we were doing things that we wanted to do, but I looked up and we were down 3-1 and 4-1. I didn't think we played badly at the start. Then we got some goals from Dan Clark and Chris Harrington, and that's great, because we need goals from guys other than B.J. and Sims and Striebel. You know they're going to get their's."
Dooley led Hofstra with three goals, while Spallina had his two. Michael Demeo made 14 saves in goal for the Flying Dutchmen.
In addition to Prager and Sims, Princeton got two goals and an assist from Clark, who has four goals and one assist in three games this year after having one goal his entire freshman year. Trevor Tierney made 10 saves for the Tigers.
Princeton outshot Hofstra 42-27 and had a 37-30 edge in ground balls. Hofstra won 15 of 23 face-offs.
