Josh Sims scored five goals and added an assist and Josh White had two big first-half goals to lead Princeton to a 15-5 win over Rutgers in front of 2,112 at the Class of 1952 Stadium. Sims tied his career high in goals, which he set last year at Rutgers.
Princeton's win was its 11th straight against in-state rival Rutgers and keeps the Harland (Tots) Meistrell Cup in Princeton. The Meistrell Cup, whose namesake revived the sport of lacrosse at both Princeton and Rutgers in 1919 and 1920, is awarded annually to the winner in the series. Rutgers had defeated Princeton nine of 10 times prior to Princeton's current 11-game run.
The game was preceded by a tribute to Rutgers coach Tom Hayes, who is retiring at the end of this season. Hayes has been a Division I head coach for 32 years, 26 of which have been at Rutgers.
Scott Massey scored twice for Rutgers, giving the Massey family the all-time lead in goals scored at the Class of 1952 Stadium. Massey's brother Chris, a former Princeton All-America, is tied with Jesse Hubbard for the Class of 1952 Stadium record with 46 career goals at the facility. "Rutgers was very tough," said Sims, a two-time first-team All-America. "They came out and challenged us, and it was a difficult game."
Princeton had nine different players score at least one goal, led by Sims and freshmen White and Sean Hartofilis, who had two each. White scored early in the first quarter and then 14 seconds before intermission as Princeton built an 8-2 lead at the half.
Sims scored 48 seconds into the second half to make it 9-2, but Rutgers picked up goals from Massey and Keith Cromwell to cut it to 9-4 and then 10-5 before Princeton scored the final five goals of the day.
"We had a lot of one-on-one type of goals," said Princeton head coach Bill Tierney. "Normally, we don't like that, but sometimes a team comes out and says `we're taking what you normally do away from you.' Rutgers did that, and we did a nice job of countering it."
White and Hartofilis were joined by classmates Owen Daly and Brad Dumont, whose goals gave Princeton's freshmen six on the day. Matt Bailer, Chris Berrier, B.J. Prager and Brendan Fallon also scored for Princeton.
"Last year, I think we had some times where we were relying on one or two people to score all the goals," Sims said. "This year, I think we have much more experience. We're doing a good job of distributing the offense. It's allowing me to be more of a role player."
Trevor Tierney made 12 saves while allowing four of the Rutgers goals. John Martino had 17 saves for the Scarlet Knights.
Princeton, outshot Rutgers 45-28, opens its Ivy League season next Saturday, April 1, against Yale at the Class of 1952 Stadium, where Princeton will also host Pennsylvania the Tuesday after that. The Tigers have won five straight Ivy titles and 25 straight league games.
