B.J. Prager scored all four of his goals in the first half and Brendan Tierney added three goals and two assists to lead Princeton to a 17-5 men's lacrosse win over Yale in front of 1,627 at the Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton's Matt Bailer had a big game, and a big pre-game, for that matter. Bailer, the junior midfielder, had a goal and an assist, won 9 of 11 face-offs and sang the national anthem prior to the start.
The victory was fourth-ranked Princeton's 26th straight in the Ivy League as the Tigers opened their quest for a sixth-straight league title. No. 20 Yale fell to 3-3 overall, 1-2 in the league.
Princeton, which hosts Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon, had 10 different players score at least one goal. The Tigers led 5-0 after the first quarter and 12-1 at intermission.
"It was a good game for us," Prager said. "We wanted to come out and get ahead and take control and have a convincing performance. I think we were able to do that." Prager scored three of his goals in the first quarter, including one with five seconds to play to make it 5-0. Tierney, whose goals, assists and points were all career highs, scored a pair of goals 11 seconds apart midway through the second quarter as Princeton built its huge lead.
Of the 26 games in its Ivy winning streak, 16 have now come by at least 10 goals.
"The Ivy League is always important," Bailer said. "It's even bigger this year, with the automatic bid [to the NCAA tournament] going to the winner."
Prager, who tied his career high with four goals, has scored at least one goal in 16 straight games and 17 of 18 for his career. Josh Sims, Princeton's two-time first-team All-America, had two goals and two assists to keep alive his streak of at least four points in every game this season.
Freshman Brad Dumont scored two goals and added an assist. In all, Princeton freshmen combined for five goals and three assists in their first Ivy experience.
Yale was shut out in the first half of its game last week against Cornell, and the Bulldogs did not score for the first 23:14 against Princeton. Brian Hunt led the Bulldogs with two goals, while Mike Morris added a goal and two assists.
"I thought we played an excellent all-around game," Princeton coach Bill Tierney said. "We wanted to come out, be aggressive, play smart defense and get up on them. I thought we did all of that. It was a very strong performance for us."
Trevor Tierney allowed three Yale goals while making six saves in three quarters.
As for the national anthem, Bailer sang with a Princeton a cappella group called "Shere Khan."
"It meant a lot to me that Coach Tierney let me do that," Bailer said. "It's something that's important to me. He wouldn't let me do it as a freshman or sophomore. I think he was waiting for me to grow up a little."
Bailer's group had previously done the anthem at Princeton men's basketball games, as well as other events.
"That's how it is here," Tierney said. "Kids are into lacrosse, but they're also into a lot of other things. We have to let them pursue those interests. I thought he did a good job, but if we lost, maybe I'd have thought differently."
