The Princeton men's lacrosse team has won five NCAA championships in the last eight years, and three of those five came as the third seed in the tournament.
The Tigers will have a chance to up that number in the next three weeks.
Princeton drew the No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament and the accompanying bye into the quarterfinals. The Tigers will meet the winner of the game between No. 6 Maryland and unseeded Hofstra for the right to play in the Final Four.
Princeton's game will be played Saturday, May 20, at approximately 4 p.m. at Rutgers Stadium in Piscataway. The game will be the second of the quarterfinal doubleheader, after No. 1 seed Syracuse faces the winner of the game between No. 8 Cornell and unseeded Georgetown.
Virginia, the defending champ, earned the No. 2 seed and will play the winner of Duke and Hobart in the quarterfinals. The other quarterfinal on Sunday, May 21, at Johns Hopkins will have the fourth-seeded host school facing the winner of the first round game between No. 5 Loyola and Notre Dame. Princeton completed its regular season with a 10-2 record, with losses only to the top two seeds in the tournament. Princeton is 4-2 against tournament teams, with victories over Cornell, Hobart, Hofstra and Johns Hopkins.
Should Princeton play Hofstra, at least one part of history will not be on its side. Only once in Bill Tierney's 13 years at Princeton have the Tigers met a team twice during the same season and won both games (vs. Johns Hopkins in 1994). Princeton defeated Hofstra 11-8 in Week 3 of this season.
Of course, Princeton and Maryland have some recent history on their side as well. The Tigers defeated the Terps in the 1997 and 1998 championship games by a combined score of 34-12.
The Hobart-Duke and Georgetown-Cornell games will be this Saturday at Hobart. The Loyola-Notre Dame and Hofstra-Maryland games will be this Sunday at UMBC.
The national semifinals and final will be Memorial Day weekend at the University of Maryland.
