Josh Sims put the finishing touches on one of the great athletic careers in recent Princeton history when he was named the winner of three major awards.
Sims was honored with the Donald McLaughlin Award, given to the outstanding midfielder in Division I lacrosse, at the USILA All-America banquet in Delaware. Sims was also named a GTE/CoSIDA spring at-large first-team Academic All-America and the College Lacrosse USA Sportsman of the Year.
Sims won the McLaughlin Award for the second time in his career after also winning as a sophomore following the 1998 season. Sims is the only Princeton player ever to win the national midfielder of the year award and the sixth Princeton player to win a USILA national award.
An economics major with a 3.57 grade-point average, Sims earned first-team Academic All-America honors this year after being named second team last year and the district team as a sophomore. He is also a three-time Academic All-Ivy League selection.
Sims, a native of Edgewater, Md., led a predominantly young Princeton team to the NCAA championship game this past season. The senior led Princeton with 36 goals and 51 points and finished his career with 103 goals and 38 assists for 141 points. His season and career goal totals are records for a Tiger midfielder, and he finished fifth all-time at Princeton in goals scored.
His two most recent awards added to quite a resume. Sims this year became the second Princeton player, along with Scott Bacigalupo '92, to be a three-time first-team All-America. He was also named the 2000 Ivy League Player of the Year and is a three-time first-team All-Ivy selection, making him the 19th player in league history to be so honored.
Sims was a member of two national champions at Princeton, and he led his team to four straight Ivy League titles and a 24-0 four-year Ivy record.
