Marvin Bressler Award: Cindy Horr
August 01, 2000 | General
When Cindy Horr graduated from Butler University she found herself in the same situation as millions of other college graduates. Unsure of where she wanted to be, she decided to follow a boyfriend out to the East Coast and work as a support staff secretary in what is now known as the Center for Visitors and Conference Services at Princeton University.
The relationship with the boyfriend didn't pan out, but the relationship
with Old Nassau lasted an amazing
24 years. Cindy Horr, who leaves Princeton in June, is the recipient of the Marvin Bressler Award.
Horr has been the director of the Center for Visitors and Conference Services for 12 years. Although her responsibilities range through most parts of the University, one of her biggest responsibilities is running the summer camps for the athletic program. She has overseen a dramatic rise in the number of sports camps at Princeton, going from one camp at the beginning to 17 camps with a total of 35 sessions last year.
How important is the summer camp program to the budget of the office? Of the $2.8 million that was generated during the last fiscal year, summer camps generated $1.4 million.
Horr has grown close to both the teams and athletes who have come and gone through the University. Student-athletes are often hired to work at the camps, and the relationships that she has made with them are both special and long lasting. Around this time of each year, she'll host a get-together at her house for student-workers past and present. She calls it "Too Cool for School but not the Pool."
Chances are, the pool will be especially filled this year by many young people whose lives were touched by this warm and talented member of the University.
