Princeton, N.J. - Sophomore Jeff Hare and freshman Teddy van Beuren each picked up their first goal of the year in Princeton's regular season finale win over Yale. The Tigers shutout Yale, 2-0, in front of 1,068 fans on senior night at Lourie-Love Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Tigers broke through at 57:55 when senior Mike Nugent's free kick from 18 yards out connected with Hare's head and ended up past goalie David Pozen. Princeton put the game away with van Beuren's goal off the crossbar at 85:13. Nugent was credited with his second assist on the night, bringing his season total to six and point total to 30.
Junior Jason White earned four saves in his tenth shutout of the season. White finished the year playing all 1,706 minutes in goal. Princeton ends the year on a 10-game unbeaten run in which White and the Tigers have six shutouts. "I think that right now this defensive unit feels it can't be scored on," says White. "The team is playing really well and we're looking to go to the NCAA tournament and hopefully not give up any goals there either."
Princeton ends the year with an overall record of 10-2-5 and an Ivy League mark of 5-1-1. The Tigers are a half-game back of Harvard in the Ivy standings. The Crimson are 5-1 after defeating Penn earlier today. Princeton wins the conference championship with a Harvard loss next Saturday, Nov. 17 vs. Brown. An Ivy title guarantees an NCAA tournament berth, however, Princeton, ranked No. 16 by the media and No. 22 by coaches, feels confident in obtaining an at-large invitation.
"I think we have a great shot at the NCAA tournament," says Coach Jim Barlow. "We can still win the Ivy League outright with a Harvard loss and we're one of the top teams in the region. I would be shocked if we weren't strongly considered."
Princeton will now play the waiting game with the season ending next weekend. The 2001 NCAA selection show will air Monday, Nov. 19 at 3:00 p.m.
