PRINCETON, N.J. – In a close Ivy League matchup, the Princeton men's soccer team fell 1-0 to #19 Cornell on Saturday night in Roberts Stadium.
With the loss, Princeton moves to 6-3-4 on the season and 1-2-1 in the Ivy League.
How It Happened
The game started with energy from both sides, with the Tigers and the Big Red putting chances together early.
Going back-and-forth, the first shot on goal of the game belonged to the Tigers from Bardia Hormozi, who sent a free kick from just outside the box towards the goal for keeper Reuben Clarson to save.
Continuing to press, Princeton found another pair of chances with a 21st-minute cross from Garry Zhang to Kevin Kelley, and a won corner by Julien Lacher in the 30th, but neither ended with a shot on target.
The intensely physical game continued, and though the Tigers found some promising plays, the Big Red matched it with solid defending and quick counters.
With halftime drawing near, Cornell had more momentum as it won two corners and forced a save out of Tiger keeper Andrew Samuels, but the match went to the break scoreless.
Entering the second half, the game resumed its previous pace and physicality.
A Lacher cross into the box in the 50th minute found a few Tiger heads before falling to the foot of Noah Hammerschmidt, who sent it just high of the net.
Sending it right back the other way with a strong counter, the Big Red made a pair of shots that the Tigers couldn't quite clear, before ultimately finding the breakthrough goal in the 57th with a far-post header.
Looking to respond, the Tigers went back on the attack and won two corners before Lacher sent another shot just out right. Lacher again nearly scored with a 70th-minute header towards the near post, but it was saved by Clarson.
The Tigers did not let up, searching for a goal relentlessly while defending the Big Red's counterpresses with Samuels making a lightning-quick save to keep it a one-goal game.
It looked like Princeton might equalize with 15 to go as Jackson Martin sent a ball from Zhang to Roka Tsunehara out front, but a Cornell defender made a slide to block the shot.
Martin again led the offense by connecting with Jonah Mwilambwe in the box, but the Big Red keeper came out to collect it through traffic and the Tigers couldn't get a shot off.
Going down to the wire, the Tigers fought for a goal but they would not find it as the clock expired Cornell 1, Tigers 0.
Up Next
The Tigers will head to Brown next weekend for their fifth Ivy match, with kickoff slated for 3:30 p.m. in Providence.
