Princeton, N.J. - Junior Sarah Ahlquist (South St. Paul, Mich.) finished with 30 saves, but it was not enough as the Princeton women's hockey team dropped their season opener to Mercyhurst, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Lady Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a power play goal from K.C. Gallo at 7:41. Seanna Murphy and Jessica Dillabough assisted on the score.
The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 when senior co-captain Melissa Deland (Washington, D.C.) scored at 11:06 with assists from sophomore Lisa Rasmussen (Washington, D.C.) and senior assistant captain Jessica Fedderly (Wyoming, Minn.). Unfortunately that was as close as Princeton could get as Mercyhurst scored four unanswered goals and held on for a 5-2 win. Sarah McDonald gave the Lady Lakers a 2-1 lead with an unassisted goal at 16:07 before Chrissy Yule tallied the eventual game-winner just 20 seconds later off of an assist from Brittany Millar. Mercyhurst added one more score in the first period on a goal by Elizabeth Betteridge to take a 4-1 lead into the first intermission.
The two teams battled through a scoreless second period until Lindsay Dellow scored off an assist from Lindsay Barch at 19:49 to give the Lady Lakers a 5-1 lead.
Sophomore Gretchen Anderson (Natick, Mass.) closed the gap to 5-2 with her goal just 47 seconds into the third period, with assists from junior Nikola Holmes (Apple Valley, Minn.) and sophomore Susan Hobson (Mississauga, Ont.) but the Tigers could not score anymore and fell by a final score of 5-2.
Ahlquist finished with 30 saves between the pipes for Princeton. Tiffany Ribble picked up the win in net for Mercyhurst, finishing with 24 saves.
Princeton will host Mercyhurst for the second half of their weekend doubleheader on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
