PRINCETON, N.J. - Melissa Deland (Sr., Washington, D.C.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 59 seconds into the first period as the Princeton women's hockey team cruised to a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers have now won their last five games, and are 6-0-2 in their last eight appearances.
Deland put the Orange and Black on the board with her fifth goal of the season when she took a pass from Jessica Fedderly (Sr., Wyoming, MN) and parked it in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Lisa Rasmussen (So., Washington, D.C.) also assisted on the goal.
The Tigers held a 17-2 advantage in shots on goal at the end of the first period, and 26-3 by the end of the second, but Braves netminder Mel Courtemanche (Woonsocket, RI) came up with several tough saves to keep the score 1-0 going into the final period. Gretchen Anderson (So., Natick, MA) gave Princeton a 2-0 lead at 2:15 of the third period when she scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season off of assists from Wanda Mason (Sr., Lewiston, ME) and Susan Hobson (So., Mississauga, Ont.). Each of Princeton's first two goals came on their first shot of the period.
Aviva Grumet-Morris (Evanston, IL) gave the Orange and Black a 3-0 lead at 11:21 of the third period when she fired a shot from the point that deflected off of a Quinnipiac defender and past Courtemanche for her second goal of the season. Rasmussen assisted on the score.
Sarah Ahlquist had to make just four saves in net for the Tigers as they out shot the Braves 37-4 on the day. Courtemanche finished with 34 saves in the loss.
Princeton will hit the road for a two-game series at Ohio State on Dec. 14 and 15. The Tigers return to Hobey Baker Rink on Friday and Saturday Jan. 11-12 to host Harvard and Brown. Those games are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
