Ryan Boyle had three goals and two assists and three other players scored three times each to lead top-ranked Princeton to a 19-2 win over Dartmouth in front of 1,487 at the Class of 1952 Stadium. The victory gave the Tigers their seventh straight Ivy League championship and eighth in the last nine years.
"The Ivy League championship is something we'll never diminish," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "Even though we're shooting for a larger prize, it's still something that's important to us."
Princeton's Class of 2001 became the third straight class to finish its career 24-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers won their 37th straight Ivy League game, moving within two of tying Cornell's all-time record of 39 straight, set between 1972-79.
Princeton, which has not lost an Ivy League lacrosse game since 1995, also set a University record for longest league winning streak, breaking the tie it held with the men's tennis team (1976-81). The all-time Ivy record is 132 straight, set by the Yale swim team from 1938-71. "Winning the league is something we never overlook," said Princeton's Winship Ross, who helped a defense that limited Dartmouth to 14 shots. "It's great to be undefeated for four years. In 20 years, it's something I'll look back on with a great deal of pride. It'd be great next year if the guys could get the [Ivy winning streak] record. It's something I'd be proud to have been a part of."
Princeton (10-1, 6-0 Ivy League) took control from the start against Dartmouth (6-7, 1-4), who was playing its fourth game in eight days. Sean Hartofilis and B.J. Prager scored 11 seconds apart three minutes into the game to start the Tigers on their way, and it was a 7-0 game at the end of the first quarter. Princeton built the lead to 10-0 before Dartmouth scored on Scott Roslyn's goal with two minutes remaining in the half, but Rob Torti answered to make it 11-1 at intermission.
The third quarter saw Princeton score seven more times to make it 18-1, and Will MacColl's goal 39 seconds into the fourth quarter left Princeton and its Tierney-mandated limit of 19.
Hartofilis, Prager and Brendan Tierney joined Boyle with three goals each, while MacColl and Jason Doneger scored twice each. MacColl also had an assist.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 42-14 for the game and 28-5 in the first half. Trevor Tierney, who made five saves in 40 minutes for Princeton, lowered his goals-against average to 4.90 and raised his save percentage to .688. Both of those marks lead Division I.
Prager extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one goal to 30 games, while Hartofilis extended his streak to 15 straight.
Princeton outscored its six Ivy opponents by a combined 88-21. In three home games, Princeton outscored its Ivy opponents 49-5.
"It's tough for a class to go 24-0 in the league," Bill Tierney said. "They have two tough trips to each school. They've had some tough games. The game a few years ago at Penn [where Princeton trailed 7-3 in the third quarter before rallying for a 9-8 win]. Last week at Cornell [where Princeton trailed 4-1 in the third before rallying for a 7-4 win]. It's not easy. When I saw about the winning streak and the University, I was very humbled and honored. That's not something we should take lightly."
Princeton hosts Hobart next Saturday (May 5) before learning its NCAA tournament seed and draw next Sunday.
