Ryan Boyle had three goals and an assist and Rob Torti had one goal and five assists to lead second-ranked Princeton to a 15-2 win over Brown at the Class of 1952 Stadium, where Princeton is now 31-0 all-time in Ivy League games. Princeton held Brown scoreless for the final 35:53.
The win, coupled with No. 1 Syracuse's 14-13 overtime loss at Loyola, could open the door for the Tigers to return to the top spot when this week's rankings are announced. Princeton improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Ivy League, while Brown, who had defeated Yale 15-14 in four overtimes Wednesday, slipped to 3-4, 1-1.
"It was a good game for us," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "We started a little slowly, but we did some nice things after that. We made the extra pass when we could, and that freed us up for some good shots. Our guys need to realize that the next guy usually has a better shot. It was tough for Brown, after they played four overtimes Wednesday, but I thought we played well." Torti, a senior, had eight assists for his career prior to the Brown game, when he almost matched that total. Torti had two assists in the first 15:14 and then had three more in a five-minute stretch of the third and fourth quarters that helped put the game away.
As for Boyle, his three goals and one assist gave him five goals and seven assists in two games this week, including Princeton's 19-8 win over Penn Tuesday. Boyle, a freshman, leads Princeton with 27 points (11 goals, 16 assists), Kevin Lowe, in 1991, was the last Princeton freshman to do so.
"I don't look at stats," Boyle said. "Sometimes you have points and sometimes you don't. For us, it's about playing well together. That's what we've done the last few games, and it's working well now.
Sean Hartofilis had three goals for the Tigers, giving him seven for the week. B.J. Prager, who extended his consecutive goal-scoring streak to 26 games, had two, and seven other Tigers had one each. Chas Gessner and Richard Tuohey scored the two Brown goals 32 seconds apart in the second quarter.
Princeton led 4-0 before Brown scored and 6-2 at the half before breaking the game open with six third-quarter goals.
