Five Princeton men's lacrosse players spanning 10 years have been chosen for the United States squad for the 2002 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships. The tournament will be held in Perth, Australia, in July 2002.
The 23-member U.S. team was chosen at tryouts at the University of Delaware this past weekend. The three-day audition included 121 players.
Kevin Lowe, the 1994 Ivy League Player of the Year, is the oldest Princetonian on the team. The other four were all members of the Tigers 2001 NCAA championship team, including Ryan Boyle, this past season's Ivy Rookie of the Year. Boyle is one of six players on the U.S. team who will be active college players next year, and he and Syracuse's Michael Powell are the only two who have recently completed their freshman seasons.
Lowe is the leading scorer in Princeton history. He and Boyle rank 1-2 in scoring among Princeton freshmen and are the only two Princeton freshmen in the last 15 years to lead the team in scoring.
Joining Lowe and Boyle will be 2001 Princeton grads Trevor Tierney, Ryan Mollett and Matt Striebel. Tierney and Mollett were first-team All-Americas, and they were honored by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association as goalie of the year (Tierney) and defenseman of the year (Mollett). Striebel shared the Roper Trophy as Princeton's outstanding senior male athlete.
Kevin Lowe's brother Darren, a 1992 Brown graduate, and Cornell's Ryan McClay, who will be a junior next year, are the only other Ivy Leaguers on the team.
The United States is the defending champion, having won the 1998 championship in Baltimore. Princeton coach Bill Tierney coached the U.S. team in that event.
