Ryan Mollett, Trevor Tierney and Matt Striebel, all key members of Princeton's NCAA champion men's lacrosse team, were named Scholar All-Americas by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. The entire 31-member team from Divisions I, II and III will be honored Friday night at the All-America banquet in Albany.
In addition, Mollett was the first player selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft of college players, held this past weekend. Mollett was taken by Rochester with the first pick, while Tierney was selected by the New Jersey Pride with the second pick.
Princeton senior Rob Torti was selected in the third round (14th overall) by New Jersey, while Striebel was taken in the fourth round (19th overall) by Bridgeport. The six-team league begins its inaugural season this weekend.
Mollett, a defenseman, was the Ivy League Player of the Year, and he and goalie Tierney were first-team All-Americas. Torti and Striebel were first-team All-Ivy League and honorable mention All-America midfielders.
Tierney and Mollett are finalists for national goalie of the year and national defenseman of the year, which will also be announced at the banquet in Albany, as will USILA national player of the year. Tierney is one of five finalists for the first Teewaraton Trophy, which will be awarded Wednesday night by the University Club of Washington, D.C., to the outstanding player in Division I lacrosse.
Princeton won its sixth NCAA championship last week, defeating Syracuse 10-9 on B.J. Prager's overtime goal.
