Princeton Announces Men's Lacrosse Schedule
July 11, 2001 | Men's Lacrosse
July 11, 2001
Princeton's men's lacrosse team will defend its NCAA championship with a 2002 schedule that differs from recent years.
The order of Princeton's Ivy League schedule has changed slightly, with Brown moved from the third game of the season to the last. For the first time since 1995, Princeton will not end its season against Hobart, as the series against the Statesmen has been ended in favor of a mid-season game against Duke.
The regular season highlight figures to be the March 23 meeting against Syracuse at Class of 1952 Stadium in a rematch of the last two NCAA championship games. Princeton lost to the Orangemen 14-8 in the 2001 regular season before defeating its archrival 10-9 in overtime in the championship game. Princeton has won six NCAA titles in the last 10 years, and Princeton or Syracuse has won the title 12 times in the last 14 years.
As they have ever year since 1993, the Tigers open with Johns Hopkins and Virginia, both on the road. After that the schedule features six straight home games, including a Friday night game on April 5 against Duke. Princeton's quest for an eighth straight Ivy League championship begins at home March 30 against Yale. Should the Tigers win that game and the April 2 home game against Penn, they would tie Cornell's record of 39 straight Ivy wins, set from 1972-79. Princeton, with 37 straight wins entering 2002, could break the record by defeating Yale and Penn and then winning at Harvard on April 13.
Princeton will return five starters from last year's 14-1 team, with key graduation losses including first-team All-Americas Trevor Tierney (goalie) and Ryan Mollett (defense). Princeton does return its starting attack of Ryan Boyle, Sean Hartofilis and B.J. Prager, as well as defensemen Damien Davis, Scott Farrell, Brian Lieberman and Joe Rosenbaum. The first midifeld of Matt Striebel, Rob Torti and Matt Bailer all graduated, but a deep corps of middies including Dan Clark, Owen Daly and Brad Dumont will be back
