PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton-Lafayette football game scheduled for Saturday night, Sept. 15, at Princeton Stadium has been postponed as Lafayette has decided to suspend all of its athletic contests through Sunday. Information on whether or not the game will be rescheduled is not immediately available.
Princeton University's decision to resume a normal schedule as soon as possible included all aspects of student life, including Thursday's originally scheduled first day of classes and athletic events. In that light, the football game was to go on unless Lafayette elected not to play, an announcement that came from the school Thursday morning.
"As troubled and conflicted as many of us are about what constitutes the appropriate action, Princeton respects Lafayette's decision and the principle of institutional autonomy," director of athletics Gary Walters said. "We are hopeful that the game can be rescheduled."
"We were preparing to play the game as part of Princeton's effort to get back to a sense of normalcy," said Princeton head coach Roger Hughes. "This has been a very difficult week for everyone."
Princeton will open its season at Lehigh Saturday, Sept. 22 and will now have its home opener Sept. 29 against Columbia (7 p.m.).
The last Princeton football game to be postponed was the 1963 game against Dartmouth, which had been scheduled to be played Nov. 23, the day after President Kennedy was assassinated. That game, the final game of that season, was pushed back one week and played on Nov. 30.
