PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton University has postponed all of its weekend athletic events, it was announced today by Gary Walters, director of athletics.
Princeton announced late Thursday that a University-wide memorial service for all victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. on Cannon Green. All students, faculty, staff, alumni and members of the local community are invited to attend.
The service is being planned by President Shirley Tilghman's office. "The purpose of the service will be to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives as a result of these tragic events -- some of whose names are already known and others whose names may not be known for some time," Tilghman said.
"While we understandably feel especially close to those who were Princetonians or were otherwise connected to members of our student body, faculty, staff and alumni body, we grieve for all who have been lost," she said. "The service also is intended to give all members of the University community an opportunity to draw strength from each other in this time of great sadness, to give voice to their sorrow and grief, and to offer comfort and peace to all who have lost family and friends."
The service is expected to last for about an hour. Speakers will include members of the faculty, students and President Tilghman.
Princeton plans to resume athletic competition Wednesday, Sept. 19 when the men's and women's soccer and field hockey teams have events scheduled.
