The Game of Life
September 20, 2001 | General
The recent book The Game of Life: College Sports and Educational Values is a statistical analysis of the benefits of intercollegiate athletics and questions the emphasis placed on collegiate athletics as it relates to an institution's mission. Authored by Andrew Mellon Foundation colleagues James Shulman and former Princeton president William Bowen, the book has been criticized by some athletic administrators for its interpretation and presentation of the data.
The Princeton Alumni Weekly conducted a roundtable discussion with the authors, Princeton's director of athletics Gary Walters '67 and Ivy League executive director Jeff Orleans. A transcript is available in the PAW on-line archives features section: 5/16/01The culture and value of sports: a roundtable discussion (http://www.princeton.edu/~paw/).
