Princeton, NJ - Courtney Johnson's second goal of the game, with 7:29 remaining in the third period, proved to be the game-winner, as the Brown women's hockey team topped Princeton, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
Already playing with an abbreviated roster, the Tigers were delt another blow on Friday night, losing Aviva Grumet-Morris (Evanston, Ill.) to an ankle injury for the tilt with the Bears. That left Princeton with only three defenseman on its roster. Goaltender Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, Minn.) stepped up though, and turned away 36 shots while keeping the Tigers in the game.
After Brown opened the scoring, Princeton tied the the game at one on a goal by Katherine Maglione with just under five minutes to play in the first period. Brown came right back, as Johnson netted her first goal of the night two minutes later. After a scorless second period, the third period opened with Gretchen Anderson (Natick, Mass.) blocking a shot and picking up the loose puck for a breakaway, beating Pam Dreyer 1:12 into the period. The game-tying goal was her team-leading 12th of the season.
"I am so proud of how we played tonight," said Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal. "We fought hard the entire game but just did not get the breaks we got last night (in a 4-3 win over Harvard) I can not ask for any more from my team."
The Tigers are off for a couple of weeks for Exams. They return to the ice with a home game against rival Yale on Jan. 27.
