Wrestling Drops Close Decision To Columbia

PRINCETON, NJ - Despite a pin by heavyweight Joe Looke (Sr., Houston, TX) and a major decision by No. 6 Greg Parker (Jr., Clifton Park, NY) at 174 lbs., the Princeton men's wrestling team dropped a tough match to Columbia, 22-19, on Wednesday night at Dillon Gymnasium.
Looke opened the match for the Tigers by pinning Bart Seemen in 2:17. Brian Kirschbaum (So., Madison, NJ) followed that by earning a 7-5 decision over Dan Green at 125lbs. to give Princeton a 9-0 lead in the match.
Steve Popovitch put the Lions on the board by pinning John Knorring (Jr., Wheaton, IL) at 6:15. Juan Venturi (Sr., Katy, TX) put the Tigers ahead 15-6 by virtue of a Columbia forfeit at 141 lbs. The Lions to a 16-15 lead by winning the next three matches. Erik Norgaard picked up a decision over Milo Adams (So., Mentor, OH) at 149 lbs., followed but Dustin Tillman's 5-2 decision over Charlie Wiggins (Fr., Howell, NJ) at 157 lbs. and Derek Nagy's major decision (12-4) over Jon Bunt (Sr., Pittsburgh, PA) at 165 lbs.
Parker gave Princeton back the lead, 19-6 with his major decision (10-0) over Chris Smolk, but the Tigers could not hold off the Lions.
The match between Anthony DeBartolo (Sr., Pitttsburgh, PA) and Jeff Anderson at 184 lbs. ended in a 3-3 tie but Columbia took the three points because of Anderson's 1:13 riding time. -Matt Gerstl's 6-4 decision over Matt Fisher (So., Pompton Lakes, NJ) at 197 lbs. sealed the 22-19 win for the Lions.
The Tigers return to the mat on Friday, Feb. 1 when they host Cornell. That match will be held in Dillon Gymnasium and is scheduled for 6 p.m.
