Princeton Tops Cornell, Clinches Share of Ivy Women's Soccer Title

Ithaca, N.Y. - Maura Gallagher scored a pair of goals in a 2:03 span of the final four minutes of the first half to give Princeton a 2-0 win over Cornell in a women's soccer game played in steady snow.
The win clinches at least a share of the Ivy League championship for the Tigers. Princeton would win the title outright if Dartmouth were to lose one of its remaining two league games (tomorrow against Harvard, next Saturday against Penn). Should Princeton and Dartmouth tie for the championship, Princeton would still win the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after its 4-1 victory earlier in the season.
"It's something you never take for granted," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "Even if you end up with a share of the championship, it's always special. This is a great feeling for us." Princeton had lost two straight 1-0 overtime games after winning its first 12, and it had been 240 minutes since Princeton had scored before the freshman Gallagher turned the game around.
Her first goal came from eight yards out after a cross from Janine Willis with 3:54 remaining in the first half, and she curled a corner kick off Cornell goalkeeper Katie Thomas with 1:51 to go to make it 2-0.
"We hadn't scored in awhile," Gallagher said. "We weren't getting frustrated. We just thought we should have some other people try to step up and make something happen. It's great to win the championship. It's part of why you come to Princeton in the first place."
Jean Poster made six saves in goal for Princeton, who outshot Cornell 26-12.
The Tigers conclude the regular season Nov. 9 at home (4 p.m.) against Colorado College.
