Stella Monberg scored twice against one of the nation's top defenses as the Princeton women's soccer team defeated Dartmouth, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Roberts Stadium, keeping the Tigers firmly in contention for the Ivy League title and tournament hosting rights.
Dartmouth entered the game ranked eighth nationally in goals-against average (0.462), fourth in save percentage (.887) and 15th in shutout percentage (.615). The Big Green had conceded just six goals in 13 games and recorded eight shutouts, with goalkeeper Ola Goebel ranking 13th nationally in goals-against average and eighth in save percentage.
Princeton needed just 62 seconds to find the net.
Monberg scored her first goal of the afternoon at the 1:02 mark, taking control of a loose ball while headed toward goal before dishing it to Dylan Jovanovic at the 18. Jovanovic sent it right back, and Monberg sent it inside the left post for just the seventh goal Dartmouth had allowed all season.
The Tigers carried that lead into halftime after limiting Dartmouth to one first-half shot overall and none on goal.
Princeton continued to threaten in the second half, with Monberg forcing saves from Goebel in the 49th and 75th minutes and Nina Cantor putting a shot on goal in the 58th.
Monberg broke through again at 78:33, after Blane McElroy chipped a ball ahead to Lewa Drew White on the end line for White to send it to Monberg for the header finish to double Princeton's advantage. The goal marked just the second time this season that Dartmouth had allowed multiple goals in a game, along with its 2-0 loss to Columbia on October 4.
Dartmouth cut the deficit in half when Lykke Ihrfelt converted a penalty kick at 87:26, but Princeton held on for its third Ivy League victory of the season.
Monberg finished with five shots, four on goal, and both Princeton goals. The Tigers outshot Dartmouth 10-6 and held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. Sydney Romano played the first half in goal for Princeton, while Cecilia Cerone played the second half and made one save.
The win improved Princeton to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2 in Ivy League play, moving the Tigers into a tie with Dartmouth, which fell to 9-3-2 overall and 3-2 in the league.
With two Ivy League games remaining, Columbia leads the standings at 4-1 (12 points), followed by Brown at 3-1-1 (10 points). Princeton, Dartmouth and Harvard are tied at 3-2 (nine points).
Princeton remains in control of an important part of its path to the Ivy League title. The Tigers can finish with 15 points by winning their final two games, while their victory over Dartmouth gives them the head-to-head advantage over the Big Green in a potential two-team tie.
Princeton will close its Ivy League schedule against Columbia and Brown, with the regular-season finale against the Bears set for November 7 at Roberts Stadium.
