Monberg Nets Both as Tigers Score Twice Late to Beat Yale
October 03, 2026 | Women's Soccer
A couple of scrambles on the doorstep of the goal resulted in the ball finding Stella Monberg's foot, and the rookie forward scored twice, less than four minutes apart, to lift the Princeton women's soccer team to a 2-1 win at Yale on Saturday night in New Haven.
At the end of match day two in Ivy League play, Princeton finds itself in the thick of the race, with Harvard, which got past the Tigers 4-3 last weekend, leading at 2-0, Brown next at 1-0-1, and Princeton tied for third alongside Dartmouth, Cornell and Columbia as the teams head for the middle third of the league season and the path toward Ivy League Tournament top-four berth begins to take shape. With Harvard at six points, Brown at four and the four 1-1 teams including Princeton at three points, Penn is in chase mode at 0-1-1 with one point while Yale dropped to 0-2. The Quakers will visit Roberts Stadium next Saturday night on match day three.
The first half was scoreless with Princeton leading 6-5 in overall shots and the teams tied 1-1 in shots on goal. In the second half, Princeton outshot the Bulldogs 11-3 overall and 6-2 on goal to finish with a 17-8 overall advantage and 7-3 on goal. The lone Yale goal came in the 73rd minute when Cindy Yang was fouled in the 18 and Anita Thorvaldsdottir converted the PK.
The 1-0 Yale lead lasted less than three minutes. Maddie Recupero sent a pass toward goal between two Yale defenders, and although Yale keeper Isabel Willems came out to jump on the pass, Willems couldn't secure the ball and Monberg jumped on a Yale defender's clearing attempt just inside the six for the finish.
The play that resulted in Monberg's second goal began on a distant Anna Chau free kick that popcorned around in front of the net until Monberg again found the loose ball and sent it in just 3:44 after her first goal, giving Princeton the lead.
Between the posts, Sydney Romano started and saved Yale's only shot on goal during her half. After the break, Cecilia Cerone allowed only the PK goal while the only other second-half Yale shot on goal resulted in a team save.
On the season, Monberg now leads the team with five of Princeton's 19 goals, with all five of Monberg's goals coming in the team's last four games.Â
