Penn Scores Late to Get Past Women's Soccer, 1-0
October 10, 2026 | Women's Soccer
A goal with 2:31 remaining gave Penn a 1-0 win over the Princeton women's soccer team Saturday night at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Princeton (5-5-1, 1-2 Ivy League) held a 19-9 advantage in shots, including 7-1 on goal, and hit the post twice in the first half, but Penn goalkeeper Ria Desai made seven saves to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
The result continued a remarkable run of close games between the programs. Nine of the previous 12 meetings had ended 1-0, including each of the last three, all Princeton victories. The Tigers had been unbeaten against Penn since 2014.
Princeton had an opportunity to take the lead early when Zoe Markesini sent a shot off the crossbar in the sixth minute. Nina Cantor followed with an attempt that Desai saved in the 15th minute.
The Tigers nearly broke through again just before halftime. Dylan Jovanovic forced a save from Desai in the 43rd minute, and Alexandra Barry struck the left post less than a minute later. Princeton finished the opening half with a 10-5 advantage in shots.
Princeton continued to create opportunities after halftime, putting four shots on goal between the 51st and 62nd minutes. Maddie Recupero, Jovanovic, Blane McElroy and Barry each tested Desai during that stretch.
Jovanovic forced another save in the 76th minute, but the game remained scoreless until the 88th, when Mia Fuss sent a crossing pass to the far post and Abbey Cook finished for her fifth goal of the season.Â
Jovanovic led Princeton with four shots, including three on goal, while Markesini, Recupero, Stella Monberg and Barry had three shots apiece. Sydney Romano played the first half in goal for the Tigers, with Cecilia Cerone taking over for the second half.
Penn improved to 6-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Ivy League.
Princeton will look to return to the win column Saturday, Oct. 17, when the Tigers visit Cornell for a 1 p.m. kickoff in Ithaca, N.Y.
