Men's Swim Team Opens Season With Double-Dual Victory

Princeton, N.J. - Junior Juan Valdivieso and sophomores Justin Chiles and Kent DeMond each captured two individual events en route to Princeton's double-dual meet victory over Cornell and Pennsylvania at DeNunzio Pool on Friday evening. The Tigers started and finished strong in a 151-92 win over the Big Red and a 168-75 win over Pennsylvania.
Princeton began the meet with wins in each of the first three events, taking the 400 Medley Relay to start the meet. Mike Salerno, Jeremy Tillman, Jeff Yellin and Carl Hessler raced to a time of 3:23.58 to get the Tigers off on the right foot. Valdivieso won the 1000 Freestyle in 9:29.12 and Chiles took the 200 Freestyle in 1:39.91 to expand the lead after only three events.
Meanwhile on the boards, DeMond led a 1-2 Princeton finish on the 1-meter with Nick Lee taking second. DeMond also won the 3-meter event for Princeton.
Also winning races on the night were junior Stephen Fleming and senior Garth Fealey. Fleming captured the 200 Backstroke, swimming a 1:49.55 and Fealey won the 200 Breaststroke in 2:05.95.
It was the Freestyle, however, that Princeton dominated with Chiles winning the 100 Free and Valdivieso winning the 500 Free as the two combined for four individual freestyle victories. To cap it all off, Princeton won the 400 Freestyle Relay a full three seconds ahead of second-place Cornell.
In the Cornell-Penn meet, the Big Red eased past the Quakers with a 140-103 win. The Princeton men will be back in action on Sunday when they host Brown with the women's team at noon.
