Tigers Roll Past Penn and Cornell In Women's Swimming Action

Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton University women's swimming and diving team rolled to early season victories over Ivy foes Cornell and Pennsylvania at DeNunzio Pool on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers opened their 2002-03 home schedule with a 225-70 win over the Big Red and a 213-84 win over the Quakers.
Things went right early for Princeton, which won each of its first three events on the night. The Tigers opened the meet with a win the 200-yard medley relay with Michelle Nielson, Chrissy Holland, Molly Seto and Chrissy Macaulay swimming a combined time of 1:45.02.
Events two and three saw Princeton finish 1-2-3-4 and build a nice cushion it would not relinquish. Freshman Ryan Whitney took even two, the 400 IM, in 4:24.86. Classmate Libby Engelmeier took second with juniors Sarah Frauman and Stephanie Wright placing third and fourth respectively. Whitney also won the 200 IM for Princeton. Sophomore Amy Jones led a Princeton sweep in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.73. Freshman Eileen Altenburger placed second, sophomore Stephanie Hsiao placed third and senior Meagan Donahue took fourth. Altenburger won the 200-yard butterfly as well.
While the Tigers were swimming away with the meet in the pool, senior Kristy Wilson was doing well in the diving events, qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Wilson won the 3-meter board and placed second on the 1-meter.
The Tigers won events five through seven with Holland winning the 100-yard breaststroke and Macaulay taking the 50-yard freestyle. Jones won her second event of the day with a victory in the 100-yard freestyle; Hsiao and Macaulay finished right behind her, taking second and third.
Princeton improves to 3-0 on the year and returns to the pool tomorrow for a noon showdown with Brown. The Tigers put their 35 dual-meet win streak on the line when they host the Bears along with the men's swim team at DeNunzio Pool.
