Princeton Sweeps Brown In Early Season Swim Showdown

Princeton, N.J. - Both the Princeton men's and women's swim teams stayed perfect this season with wins over Brown on Sunday afternoon at DeNunzio Pool. The men's team improved to 3-0 with a 210-83 win over the Bears while the women moved to 4-0 with a 160-125 victory.
Princeton won each of the first five events and never looked back. The Tigers won 21 of the first 25 races, including several sweeps in the winner's circle. The women's 200-yard medley relay team set the tone with three seniors, Michelle Nielson, Chrissy Holland and Molly Seto swimming alongside sophomore Chrissy Macaulay and taking event one with a time of 1:45.18.
The men's 200 medley relay team, consisting of seniors Pat Donahue, Garth Fealey, Jesse Gage and James Leahy followed suit with a first-place finish and time of 1:32.65. The Tigers won both 1000-yard freestyle races with junior Sarah Frauman winning for the women and senior Paul Cremer winning for the men. Sophomore Amy Jones' victory in the 200-yard freestyle made if 5-for-5 on the day for Princeton. The Tigers put the meet away early with 1-2-3-4 finished in events eight, nine and 10. Junior Steve Flemming led Princeton's 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100-yard backstroke with his time of 50.75. Donahue placed second while freshman Alan Fishman and junior Warren Cheng placed third and fourth respectively.
The women's 100 back saw similar results with Holland, junior Lauren Rossi, freshman Whitney Ryan and junior Meredith Saylor finishing 1-2-3-4. The men answered with another sweep, this time in the 100-yard breaststroke with Fealey leading the charge. Sophomore Jeremy Tillman, junior Hallet Johnson and sophomore Greg Glass followed in order.
On the boards, Princeton qualified two more divers for the NCAA zone championships with Michael Sullivan and Kent DeMond each qualifying on the 3-meter. Sullivan won the 3-meter event, DeMond placed second and Nick Lee took third for a Princeton sweep. DeMond also won the 1-meter event and Kristy Wilson did the same on the women's side. Wilson qualified for the NCAA zone meet in yesterday's competition against Cornell and Pennsylvania.
Back in the pool, the Tigers continued to dominate with Princeton winning the 200-yard butterfly events, 50-yard freestyle events, 200-yard backstroke events and 200-yard breaststroke events. Freshman Eileen Altenburger won the 200 fly for the women; junior Juan Valdivieso won the 200 fly for the men. Seto took the 50 free in 24.10 on the women's side as Gage led a Princeton sweep on the men's side with a time if 20.89.
"We've worked really hard," says women's head coach Susan Teeter. "To come so far so fast is really exciting."
The Princeton women won nine events and eight different swimmers/divers earned first-place finishes. Frauman had two victories to lead a very balanced attack. The men won 12 individual events with Gage leading the way with three first-place finishes. Fealey had two for the Tigers.
Both the men and women are idle over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and will compete together once again when they host the Princeton Invitational on Friday-Sunday, Dec. 6-8 at DeNunzio Pool.
