NORFOLK, Va. - Sophomore midfielder Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) scored twice, while teammates Cory Picketts (Jr., Marmora, N.J.) and Rachael Becker (Sr., Broomall, Pa.) added a goal apiece, as No. 14 Princeton earned a 4-2 win over No. 8 North Carolina in a contest played at Old Dominion University on Sunday. For the Tigers, who assured themselves a trip to the NCAA tournament with their ninth consecutive Ivy League championship earlier in the week, it was their first win this season over a Top 10 team.
Picketts opened the scoring by converting on a penalty corner at the 8:50 mark. Martirosian and Ilvy Friebe (Sr., Bonn, Germany) assisted on the goal. Kerry Falgowski temporarily tied it for the Tar Heels at the 31:33 mark, but Martirosian scored her first goal less than two minutes later to open the lead to 2-1.
That score would hold until Becker scored 12:20 into the second half, opening Princeton's first two-goal lead of the game. Martirosian supplied the late insurance with a score at the 67:12 mark. North Carolina would find the back of the cage one more time before the final whistle, but it was far from enough to stop Princeton from taking home its 10th win of the season. It is head coach Beth Bozman's 10th consecutive season with at least 10 wins.
Princeton will conclude its regular season Friday night when it hosts the Penn Quakers at Class of 1952 Stadium.
