Tigers Win 2002 Princeton Swimming And Diving Invitational

Princeton, N.J. - The Tigers continued to dominate in the pool on Sunday afternoon as both the men's and women's swim teams came out on top at the 2002 Princeton Invitational. The Tigers concluded three days of competition with a combined 2,448.5 points to take the school title as well.
The women's team won with 1,127 points, 386 points better than second-place Rutgers. Junior Sarah Frauman highlighted day three with a record-breaking performance in the 1650-yard freestyle. Frauman smashed the old Princeton record of 16:45.77 set by Tara Martin in 1988 with a time of 16:38.80. Freshman Libby Engelmeier, who finished third in the event (16:48.89) joins Frauman as an NCAA provisional qualifier with today's time.
"Sarah has been one of my best swimmers all year," says Princeton coach Susan Teeter. "She really swam well today and I'm happy with where she is right now."
The men's team scored 1,321 points as Rutgers once again finished second with 603 points. Seniors Jesse Gage and Carl Hessler won individual events with Gage taking the 100-yard freestyle (45.02) and Hessler winning the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.73). The 400-yard freestyle relay team also won with Hessler, Gage, Mike Salerno and Justin Chiles swimming a time of 3:00.21.
The men return to action this Wednesday, Dec. 11 with Army visiting DeNunzio Pool at 4 p.m. The women are idle for the rest of the calendar year and return to action when they host Northeastern on Jan. 11.
