BURLINGTON, VT - Princeton picked up two much needed points in the ECAC playoff race with a 4-2 win over Vermont in men's hockey action on Saturday night in Gutterson Fieldhouse. Princeton is 9-16-2, 8-10-2 in the ECAC. Vermont drops to 3-24-2, 3-16-1 in the conference.
Vermont struck first, taking a 1-0 lead at 5:45 on a goal from Brady Leiserling. John Longo and Bryson Busniak took the initial shots, and Leiserling was able to collect the rebound and knock it home.
The Cats kept the pressure on in the first, with two shots going wide of the left post by mere inches in the first 10 minutes of the period.
Princeton knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal from David Schneider (Sr., Melrose Park, IL). Scott Prime (So., Moncton, New Brunswick) fired a shot, it deflected off of a Vermont defenseman just outside the crease, and Schneider was able to tip it in past Catamount netminder Tim Peters for his fourth goal of the season at 14:11. George Parros (Jr., Randolph, NJ) gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead when he unloaded a shot from the right circle that found the back of the net at 19:01. Neil Stevenson-Moore (Fr., North Vancouver, BC) sent the puck out of the Princeton defensive zone to David Del Monte (Sr., Mississauga, ONT) on the left wing. Del Monte sent the puck across the ice to Parros, who fired it home for his eighth goal of the season.
Josh Roberts (Sr., Orleans, MA) gave Princeton a two-goal cushion with the Tigers second shorthanded goal of the season at 17:51 of the second period. Schneider sent the puck up the ice to Roberts on the right wing and he beat Peters five-hole just 22 seconds into the Vermont power play for his third goal of the season.
Stevenson-Moore scored Princeton's fourth unanswered goal at 5:56 of the final period. He was the beneficiary of some great passing by Del Monte and Parros just in front of the crease. Parros got the puck from Del Monte and sent it to Stevenson-Moore who was skating just outside the left side of the crease and knocked it home for his sixth goal of the season.
Vermont almost made the score 4-2 at the 10-minute mark of the third. Ryan Cox took a shot that had Stathos beat to the glove side, but the puck rimmed off the right post and the cross bar before ricocheting out of the crease.
The Cats came back and closed the gap to 4-2 with a goal by Gerard Miller from the point at 12:32 while Vermont was skating with a five-on-three advantage. Patrick Sharp and Jeff Miles assisted on the goal.
Dave Stathos posted 19 saves. Tim Peters had 18 saves and allowed three goals in 40 minutes between the pipes. Shawn Conschafter played 19:10 of the third period, making 10 saves.
Princeton had not been victorious at Gutterson Fieldhouse since a 3-2 win in the third game of the ECAC quarterfinals in 1996-97. The Tigers are now 2-0-1 in their last three games.
Princeton will close out the regular season by hosting Brown and Harvard on March 1-2. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
