The Princeton University department of athletics will be participating in the 16th annual National Girls and Women In Sports Day this Saturday, Feb. 9.
The event will be held in Jadwin Gym prior to the start of the Princeton-Yale women's basketball game. Saskia Webber, a Princeton High School and Rutgers University graduate and a member of the U.S. World Cup champion women's soccer team, will be the featured speaker.
Princeton will have an interactive sports fair featuring many of its women's teams beginning at 5:30 in Jadwin Gym. Stations will be set up behind the basketball court in the track area, where fans can meet the players and coaches participate in each represented sport.
The fair will run for approximately one hour. Upon its conclusion, fans will be invited to the main court, where Princeton will face Yale in an Ivy League women's basketball game. Webber will address the crowd briefly before tip-off.
Princeton players will then be available after the game to sign autographs.
National Girls and Women In Sports Day was created by an act of Congress in 1986 to celebrate the achievements of girls and women in sports. The first NGWSD was organized to honor Flo Hyman, the Olympic volleyball player who died suddenly from Marfan Syndrome in 1986.
Since then, the event has grown to feature celebrations in all 50 states. Last year's event at Jadwin Gym attracted nearly 2,200 fans.
