Princeton, NJ - Nicole Corriero's (Thornhill, ONT) goal with 3:04 left in the game gave the Harvard women's hockey team a 3-2 come from behind victory over Princeton in the quarterfinals of the ECAC North Tournament. The win gives Harvard a 1-0 advantage in the best of three playoff series.
The Tigers took an early lead when Susan Hobson (Mississauga, ONT) sent a pass from behind the net to Gretchen Anderson (Natick, MA), who converted the shot to put Princeton ahead with 15:23 left in the first period. Anderson made it 2-0, notching her team-high 25th goal of the year, a power play tallei at 2:47 of the second period, stuffing a rebound between the post and Harvard goalie Alison Kuusisto (Duluth, MN) with the assist again going to Hobson. The Crimson got on the board in the second period on an individual effort by freshman Ashley Banfield (Toronto, ONT). Banfield broke out of the Harvard zone, shifted by a defender in the neutral zone, beat another defender near the face off circle and sent a shot past Princeton netminder Megan Van Beusekom (Loretto, MN). Banfield also netted the equalizer in t2he second when Lauren McAuliffe (North Reading, MA) worked hard in the corner and emerged with the puck. Banfield crashed towards the net from the blueline and snapped McAuliffe's pass into the net.
Corriero scored on a two-on-one with a quick wrist shot from the right face off circle. It was the 32 goal of the year and the fifth game-winner for the freshman.
"We started out well," said Princeton head Coach Jeff Kampersal. "We played hard and with a lot of passion, But we didn't have enough gas. Once we started to get back into our defensive zone, we started to make a few mistakes. That cost us."
Harvard, which improves to 17-10-2, outshot the Tigers 44-21 as Kuusisto made 19 saves. Van Beusekom made 41 stops as the Tigers fall to 15-10-3 on the season. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink.
