PRINCETON, N.J. - Harvard forward Kalen Ingram (Jr., Peterborough, ONT) scored two goals in the third period at Baker Rink Saturday night to lead the Crimson into the Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinals with a 3-1 win over host Princeton (15-11-3).
Harvard (18-10-2) came out firing from the start, launching 19 first period shots. Tiger goalie Megan Van Beusekom (So., Loretto, MN) turned away 18 but could not stop a diving deflection by Crimson forward Kat Sweet (Fr., St. Davids, PA) just after a Harvard power play expired. Princeton managed just six shots in the period and headed to the locker room down 1-0.
Van Beusekom kept the Tigers in the game in the second, saving all 13 shots she faced, including a trio of consecutive close-range attempts. After a Lauren McAuliffe (So., North Reading, MA) slapshot from the left side ricocheted off Van Beusekom's pad, Ingram fired the rebound back from the center, which bounced to Ashley Banfield (Fr., Toronto, ONT) on the right side, whose attempt was knocked away by the diving goalie. Princeton forward Jessica Fedderly (Sr., Wyoming, MN) evened the score at 9:59, slipping a wrist shot by Harvard goalie Alison Kuusisto (Sr., Duluth, MN), assisted by forwards Melissa Deland (Sr., Washington, DC) and April Brown (Fr., Savage, MN). Still alive despite a 32-10 shot disadvantage, the Tigers lost control late in the third when Ingram scored her first goal at 8:57, giving the Crimson a 2-1 lead on a shot Van Beusekom initially blocked but could not control as it slid over the line. At 15:31, Ingram clinched the win by taking a faceoff from the right circle and moving in unassisted to beat Van Beusekom.
Van Beusekom made 37 saves on the night while Kuusisto needed only ten. Both teams failed to make use of the power play as Princeton went 0-2 and Harvard went 0-4 in the final game for Princeton's seniors.
"These four seniors as a group are the best class I've ever had in terms of focus," Tiger head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "They left a legacy."
