Ryan Boyle, the quarterback of a Princeton team that won an eighth straight league championship and earned a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament, has been named the 2002 Ivy League Men's Lacrosse Player of the Year.
Boyle becomes the second player in league history to be named Ivy Rookie of the Year as a freshman and Player of the Year as a sophomore. Jesse Hubbard, the leading goal-scorer in Princeton history, is the other.
Boyle was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League selection, as was his teammate Damien Davis, a junior defenseman. Boyle and Davis were joined on the All-Ivy first team by attackman B.J. Prager and midfielder Brad Dumont.
Princeton was represented on the second team by attackman Sean Hartofilis, midfielder Kyle Baugher and defenseman Scott Farrell. Midfielder Josh White was an honorable mention selection. Princeton received the No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament and will face the winner of the Georgetown/Manhattan game in the quarterfinals Saturday, May 18, at Hofstra. The Tigers have won six NCAA championships in 10 years, including last year's.
Boyle, who has scored at least one point in every game of his career, led Princeton with 17 goals and 27 assists for 44 points and led the Ivy League in assists in all games and scoring in league games (11-16-27).
Davis, who like Boyle has started every game of his career, was a second-team All-Ivy pick and second-team All-America a year ago. He was the leader of the Princeton defense that again ranked near the top nationally, allowing 7.92 goals per game.
Prager became the 21st player in Ivy League history and the fifth to play for Bill Tierney at Princeton to be a three-time first-team All-Ivy League selection (Scott Bacigalupo '92, Kevin Lowe '94, Jesse Hubbard '98 and Josh Sims '00 were the others). Prager, who was also a second-team All-Ivy selection once, scored 25 goals during the regular season and stands fifth all-time at Princeton with 109.
Dumont used a strong NCAA tournament a year ago, including a two-goal game against Syracuse in the championship game, to launch himself into a big junior year. Dumont finished with 18 goals and five assists in the midfield.
Baugher and Farrell, tri-captains along with Prager, were named to the second team, along with Hartofilis. Baugher is Princeton's top shortstick defensive middie, a position that rarely lends itself to individual honors. Farrell, a three-time All-Ivy pick, is Princeton's top interior defenseman. Hartofilis, a first-team pick a year ago, had 24 goals and seven assists for the regular season.
White, who had eight goals and eight assists for his first two years combined, had 13 goals and eight assists during the regular season.
