Perth, Australia - Ryan Boyle '04 and the U.S. men's lacrosse team continue to sizzle Down Under.
Boyle, the 2002 Ivy League Player of the Year, scored two goals and had an assist, running his four-game scoring totals to 10 goals and eight assists, as the U.S. defeated England 21-3 in the final game of pool play at the World Lacrosse Championships.
The U.S. team had already clinched the top spot in the semifinal round prior to its game against the English, who needed a win to advance. Instead, the Americans scored six times in the the first 10 minutes and built a 9-2 halftime lead to eliminate the English.
The tournament has been played in three divisions, and the top four teams in the highest-seeded Blue Division and the top team in the next-level Red Division advanced out of pool play. The Green Division was for emerging lacrosse nations who were not eligible for the championship round. Japan, who defeated Wales 21-8 to win the Red Division, will face the fourth-place team in the Blue Division, the Iroquois nation, in an elimination game. The winner of that game will play the U.S. in Friday's semifinals, which will also see Canada (second in Blue) take on Australia (third in Blue). The five remaining teams will make up the top division at the next World Championships, to be held in 2006.
Michael Powell of Syracuse led the Americans with two goals and five assists against England. A total of 12 different players scored for the U.S., who got two goals and an assist from Kevin Lowe '94 and a goal from Matt Striebel '01.
Trevor Tierney '01 made four saves while allowing two goals. Ryan Mollett '01, like Lowe and Boyle an Ivy League Player of the Year, is a starting defenseman for the U.S..
The U.S. team outscored its four opponents 78-25, including 22-6 against the Iroquois in the first game. The closest game was a 14-9 win over Canada, who defeated Australia 14-12 Wednesday. The Americans defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime to win the last World title, in Baltimore in 1998.
