Perth, Australia - Kevin Lowe '94 scored four goals and added an assist to lead the United States past the Iroquois Nationals 18-8 in the semifinal round of the International Lacrosse Federation World Championships at the UWA Sports Park.
The U.S. will meet Canada Sunday (3 p.m. Australia time, 1 a.m. Eastern time) in the championship game. The Canadians edged Australia 15-14 in the other semifinal. The final will be rematch of the last world championship game, which the U.S. won 15-14 in overtime in Baltimore in 1998. The Americans defeated the Canadians 14-9 in round robin play in this year's event.
Trevor Tierney '01 made seven first -half saves in goal to help the U.S. to a 9-2 halftime lead. Lowe, the 1994 Ivy League Player of the Year, scored three of his four goals before intermission.
Ryan Boyle had one goal and three assists for the Americans. Boyle, the 2002 Ivy League Player of the Year, has had at least four points in each of the five games the U.S. team has played at the World Championships. Matt Striebel '01 had his third goal of the championships for the Americans. Princeton's fifth representative, Ryan Mollett, started on defense.
Rutgers recruit Delby Powless, a former All-America at Herkimer Community College, led the Iroquois Nationals with four goals.
In the second semifinal, Canada overcame an early five-goal deficit to defeat the host team. Australia led 7-2 after one quarter, but the Canadians pulled to within 8-7 at the half. Australia stretched the lead back to 11-8 late in the third quarter, but Canada went on a six-goal run to take a 14-11 lead and Australia was unable to get closer than one after that. Shawn Williams scored three key goals for the Canadians in the fourth quarter.
The U.S. and Canada will meet for the world title for the second straight time and the fifth time in the last seven ILF World Championships. The U.S. has won five straight ILF World Championships since losing to Canada 17-16 in overtime in Manchester, England, in the 1978 ILF World Championship.
