July 06, 2002 | Men's Lacrosse
July 6, 2002
Perth, Australia - Kevin Lowe scored four goals and Ryan Boyle added three to lead the United States to a 21-6 win over the Iroquois Nation in the first game at the 2002 World Lacrosse Championships in Perth, Australia.
The U.S. team, coached to the title in 1998 by current Princeton head coach Bill Tierney, is the defending champion of the event.
Lowe, who led the U.S. team in goals in the game, was the 1994 Ivy League Player of the Year who scored the game-winning goal in overtime against Virginia to give Princeton the NCAA title that year.
Boyle, the most recent Ivy League Player of the Year, and Johns Hopkins' attackman Bobby Benson scored three goals each.
Princeton is represented on the U.S. team by Lowe, Boyle and 2001 grads Ryan Mollett, Trevor Tierney and Matt Striebel. A record 15 nations are competing in this year's ILF championship. The last time the championship was held in Perth was in 1990 when only five nations competed. The first ILF championship was held in 1967 and since 1974 the event has been held every four years. The U.S. has won all but one ILF World Championship, losing to Canada in 1978. The U.S. defeated Canada 15-14 in overtime in Baltimore to win the 1998 title.
The U.S. plays against host Australia on Sunday (July 7).
