Perth, Australia - Ryan Boyle had three goals and an assist to lead the U.S. team to a 14-9 win over Canada in the third game of round-robin play at the World Lacrosse Championships.
The Americans clinched the top spot in the Blue division of the event with an easier-than-expected win over their top rival. The Canadians, led by the legendary Paul Gait and John Grant, are considered the favorite in the tournament.
The U.S. finishes pool play Thursday against England before playing in the semfinals Friday against the winner of the Red Division (likely to be Japan or Scotland) and the fourth place team in the Blue Division (either Australia or England). The Canadians will play the third-place Blue team (either Australia or England) in the other semifinal Friday, and the championship game will be played 3 p.m. Sunday Australian time (10 p.m. Saturday night Eastern time).
The U.S. led 4-2 after one quarter and 7-5 at halftime before scoring seven straight to break the game open. The teams had gone overtime in the 1998 championship game before the Americans won 15-14.
