Princeton, N.J. - Gretchen Anderson and Andrea Kilbourne had a goal and an assist each, and Megan Van Beusekom made a game-high 31 saves in another strong outing as women's hockey outlasted Brown 2-1 at Baker Rink Friday night.
After fifteen minutes of scoreless play in the first period, Princeton opened the scoring on their first power play opportunity of the game. Anderson took a shot from the right side that deflected off Bear goalie Pam Dreyer and skidded across the crease, and Kilbourne came sliding in to punch it home for a 1-0 lead at 15:22. Nikola Holmes was also credited with an assist on the play. The lead did not last long, however, as Brown's Cassie Turner converted a power play chance a 18:26, catching Van Beusekom off-guard and slapping the puck to the back of the net from straight on to tie the game at one after one. The Tigers missed out on some good scoring chances and Van Beusekom kept denying the Bears' shooters as the teams skated to a scoreless second period.
It looked as though the third period would have the same result until, immediately following roughing penalties for Princeton's Angela Gooldy and Brown's Myria Heinhuis, Anderson and Kilbourne hooked up again. This time Anderson was rewarded for her early assist. On a two-on-one break, Kilbourne sent a pass to Anderson who then flipped the puck past Dreyer on the left side. Annamarie Holmes recorded the second assist on Anderson's game-winner. Van Beusekom made 16 saves in the third, and the Tigers killed a late penalty to preserve the one-goal win.
With the win, Princeton improves to 11-4-2 on the season overall and 4-1-0 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Brown drops to 5-7-3 overall and 3-3-0 in the ECAC. The Tigers take on top-ranked Harvard tomorrow at 4:00pm at Baker Rink. The Bears travel to New Haven to take on Yale.
